Back to Graveyard

Preamble

This is the entire rough draft of a PawaPuro fanfiction (yes you read that correctly) turned original concept from early 2024 titled Mysterious Hybrid X.

It's about a soldier who finds out he has the DNA of countless alien species woven into him, and has the abilty to transform into those alien species upon coming into contact with their DNA. The story would've centered around him trying to uncover the mystery behind his abilities while also fighting against Killhounds, mass-produced creatures from an unknown planet programed to cause suffering and destruction.

Mysterious Hybrid X

Part 1: Disturbance

On a windy November day, hundreds of different extraterrestrial species suddenly begin to appear on Earth. Their arrival is immediately met with panic and fear. Due to not being able to speak and understand human language, these aliens are unable to explain themselves.

Humanity is shoved into a new frontier by their arrival. It has now been several years since that fateful day and Earth is a completely different place. Aliens have integrated themselves into the natural ecosystem, as well as living and working together with humans.

However, Earth and the things on it are also constantly under siege by hostile aliens dubbed “Killhounds”. They are incredibly hard to kill and can cause widespread destruction if not dispatched. Even worse is that they keep showing up. For that reason, organizations have been formed around the globe to combat this threat. One of these is the Hostile Alien Control Squadron (HACS, pronounced “hacks”), which has multiple branches in major cities around the world.

The main character, Atsunao Seiza, has PTSD due to an incident in his childhood where a giant Killhound attacked his family while they were on a camping trip. The alien ate both of his parents and left Atsunao with both physical and emotional scars. He was 11 when this occurred. He was sent to live with his uncle in Tokyo, whom he would spend the rest of his childhood with.

His reasoning for joining the Shibuya branch of HACS is that he wants to prevent others from going through what he did all those years ago.

On a mission, Atsunao is ambushed by a Killhound. Atsunao loses control of himself and manages to grievously wound the creature with only a combat knife and his bare hands before it's dispatched by his fellow troops.

Atsunao is immediately taken to a HACS med bay, still clinging onto life despite having suffered injuries that would've killed him.

While running tests on him, the head doctor, Dr. Gungho finds something is wrong with his DNA. After secretly making a copy of his DNA profile, Dr. Gungho has his scientists do more tests on the irregularity. It is found through computer simulations that Gina’s DNA is highly sensitive to genetic mutation, as well as having fragments of the DNA of many other extraterrestrial species woven into it, many unknown to science. This finding was met with mixed emotions. Atsunao has no alien relatives, so why did he have the DNA of aliens humans hadn’t even discovered yet in him?

Meanwhile; Atsunao is still recovering from his injuries in the med bay, unaware of the tests being done on his DNA. His highschool friend and fellow HACS member, Kazuo Sota, comes to visit and offer his condolences for what he went through several weeks prior.

Part 2: Awakening

Upon recovering from his injuries, Atsunao is brought to the science wing of HACS for a meeting with Dr. Gungho. While his escorts go to get the doctor, Atsunao decides to snoop around. He comes across a lab filled with important-looking equipment and screens on the walls. The screens displayed a blown up rendering of a DNA strand highlighted red. Text boxes pointing to different sections of it. After doing a double-take, Atsunao’s eyes immediately snap to the center screen, his full name and personal details were displayed in the top-right corner of the screen.

Atsunao is left wondering if the meeting with the doctor was about whatever this was. The silence that lingered in the room is broken by a loud bang followed by the sound of metal tearing. Atsunao is immediately greeted by a Killhound gnawing through a reinforced wall. Panicked, he backs up into a nearby table trying to create distance from the armored creature and accidentally crushes one of the small glass petri dishes sitting on it with the palm of his hand. He winces in pain and looks to see how badly his hand was cut up but instead sees his hand soaking up the dish’s fluid as the glass shards simply slide off.

Suddenly; he begins to shake uncontrollably as the sensation of every bone in his body growing and snapping shoots through him. His screams of pain turning into guttural howls as his vision goes red, then black.

A blood-covered Atsunao wakes up in a hospital bed, restraints tightened around him. The first thing he does upon regaining consciousness is cry for help, which comes out a loud roar. The second thing he sees are a group of scientists gasping and sighing with relief as he stirs back to life.

With a shaky voice, Dr. Gungho explains that he had suddenly and violently transformed into an alien and managed to kill the Killhound while in the clutches of a trauma-induced panic attack. The fight then spilled out into the hallway and ended with Atsunao stabbing the alien in its neck with his tail, flooding a vital artery with poison and killing it. Atsunao then ran out of energy and passed out.

Despite his brain being addled with fog, Atsunao suddenly remembers the events leading up to his transformation and tells Dr. Gungho right that before he transformed, he accidently broke a petri dish by crushing it with his hand. The doctor perks up, recalling that he had a table with equipment, including petri dishes, that had contained DNA of a recently discovered alien species he was studying. That table was in the same room the Killhound broke into. He concludes that when Atsunao broke that dish, he manged to absorb its contents, which then reacted with the irregularity he discovered earlier and turned him into that alien; a fur-covered reptilian creature they named “Zyix”

Atsunao is confused by what Dr. Gungho means by “irregularity”, causing the doctor to explain what he had been meaning to tell him before the incident: that his DNA is susceptible to genetic mutation, and that he had unknown alien DNA embedded within him.

Atsunao is floored by the revelation and fearing that he is going to be experimented on, becomes hysterical. Forcing the doctor to tranquillize him.

Later, Ren Databoshi, the head of HACS Shibuya, tells the science team to find out a way to isolate and prepare the irregularity for widespread use, as it was of great interest to the rest of HACS. After many months of research, development, and trial and error, they came up with a prototype. It would be several more months of testing and refining before this device would see combat.

Part 3: Spread

HACS Shibuya is preparing to send troops on a mission to investigate an unnatural disturbance on the planet MKTY-L7-02. Atsunao, Kazuo and Roland are assigned to this mission.

Before he can enter the ship, Atsunao is stopped by his commander. He explains that he has a gift from the doctor for him before carefully handing him a protective case. Inside were recent inventions of HACS. One was a black glove meant to be worn on one’s dominant hand. There was a circle-shaped symbol on the palm that shocked him a little when firmly pressed. The other was some type of syringe-looking device; it was ugly and cumbersome compared to the sleek and alluring glove. There was a screen on one side that displayed vital information when activated, most of it was Greek to him.

As he placed the glove on his hand and placed the syringe into the holster made for it, his commander firmly told him that these devices was meant to be used in emergencies only. Atsunao asked how and what kinds of emergencies they should be used in but he only responded with “You’ll figure it out on your own.” Those words echoed in his mind as he boarded the ship.

Upon arriving, the troops are greeted by the planet’s native inhabitants, Aelfs. They explain that a large creature that has suddenly appeared from out of nowhere is destroying the forest and killing anything that moves, making it so that approaching it is impossible. It is negatively effecting their livelihoods, as they rely on the forests and the creatures that live in them. Sota immediately suspects that it’s a Killhound, but Roland shuts him down, stating that those have only ever appeared on Earth. He instead theorizes that it may just be megafauna that’s gone berzerk. Roland’s theory draws ire from Sota.

As the squadron advances deep into the forest, the damage caused by the creature becomes more apparent and disturbingly, more familiar. Trees snapped in half, bisected corpses of dead creatures strewn about, and natural structures marred by claw marks and bodily fluids. Each step they take fills them all with more and more dread.

“See? I was r-right!” As with everyone, Sota is clearly on edge from seeing all the carnage.

“Y-yes. Sota. I see it too.” Roland’s voice trembles. It seems the more he takes in his surroundings, the more it unnerves him.

The sound of something snapping in the distance causes everyone to freeze.

“What was that?” one of the troops asks.

Atsunao is downed trying to protect Roland. He uses his remaining strength to hand over his glove and syringe to him, calling on him to use them before the Killhound finishes them all off. With the lives of his allies on the line; he hastily places the glove onto his hand and jabs the device onto his hand. Instantly, searing hot pain shoots through him and he begins to screech in agony as he undergoes his horrific transformation

As the smoke clears, the downed soldiers stare in a mix of amazement and sheer terror at the new figure before them. The syringe falls to the floor with a loud clang. Fearlessly staring the Killhound down, a now hybridized Roland lets out a warcry, his new stinger fiercely snapping its jaws at the foe.

With the threat finally dispatched. Roland gets to work retrieving all of the soldiers and getting them all back to the village.

But first, he goes to meet Sota and Atsunao, who are both reeling from their injuries.
